Barcelona 2022 are undeniable champions

Barcelona 2022 Football Academy players celebrate after being crowned champion of the Umjindi Local Football Association Stream A.

They did so in style, as they walloped Baggio United 5-1 in an encounter at Extension 10 Phase II Sports Grounds on Saturday afternoon.

Goals by Banele Ngomane (x2), Wandile Gwebu, Siphe Msibi and an own goal by Ayanda Mdluli ensured that Future Mfana, as Barcelona 2022 are known in football circles, clinched the league title with 72 points.

FC Status finished in second position with 71 points. They will now square off against Satico Sawmills, champions of ULFA Stream B.

The encounter will take place next Saturday at a venue still to be confirmed.

The winners will automatically be promoted to the SAB Ehlanzeni League.

The win for Barcelona 2022 means that they finish the ULFA without a defeat.

Out of the 26 matches they played, the Lungile “Mambush” Mokone-led side have won 23 games and drawn three.
They have accumulated 72 points.

Mokone believes that Barcelona 2022 must win more to be considered local football’s greatest-ever side.

“It’s so good,” he said of Barcelona 2022’s record-breaking afternoon. “We had to fear no one to maintain our level all season, try to break the record and maintain our intensity. A total of 87 points, a lot of goals and wins, that’s a consequence of the season we have done.

“Now it’s one more game. We’ll try to win the play-offs and finish this almost perfect season.

“We’ve spoken about trying to write a new page. I cannot forget when we started to campaign in this league some three seasons ago with a bunch of youngsters who never before competed in a structured league. You have to make more years to be a champion, but in one season we were better than all of them. We are not aware of what we have done. Records will be broken but the team who are going to break it have to do many good things,” added Mokone.

“It is our dream to campaign in the SAB League. It is a league structure that will offer us the right platform to develop future professional players, as it is our desire to do so. But for now, we need to put all our efforts and focus on the encounter against Satico,” said Mokone, who holds a D licence in coaching.
