PSL legends put prisoners’ skills to the test

Some of the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) Legends who visited Barberton Maximum Centre. They are Jabulani Mendu, Benedict Vilakazi, Dumisa Ngobe, Lovers Mohlala, Frank Makua, Lucky Maselesele, Rodney Thobejane and Heraipha Marumo.

This after they beat the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) Legend Side 4-3 in the final held at Barberton Maximum Centre on Monday. The tournament was part of the Mandela Month activities.

Mandla Nkosi was a hero for his side, as he scored a hat-trick, with China Zikalala scoring the only other goal. Legends’ is goals were scored by Heraipha “Simba” Marumo (2) and ex-Kaizer Chiefs striker, Lucky “Romario” Maselesele.

Four teams within the DCS in Barberton, competed in the tournament, along with the PSL Legend Team. The teams from the DCS were Barberton Juvenile, Maximum A, Maximum B and Medium B.

The PSL Legends included former stars like Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi, Heraipha “Simba” Marumo, Jethro “Lovers” Mohlala, Frank “Disco” Makua, Dumisani “Sphithiphithi” Ngobe and Jabulani “S-Curl” Mendu.
Prior to the start of the games, the Legends donated four sets of soccer kits to the offenders.

According to Marumo, their visit to the prison was to encourage the offenders to use their rehabilitation time inside to improve their lives.

“Everyone of you here has potential. It is up to you how you use it. You might be here today languishing behind bars, but know that you have your own potential. While here, try to find your potential and ensure that once released, you use it to its fullest,” said Marumo.

The champions received a floating trophy. Mandla Nkosi from Medium B was voted top goal scorer of the tournament with three goals, while Bongani Zikalala, also from the Medium B, scooped the player of the tournament award.
