Mediclinic will no longer operate in Barberton

BARBERTON – The hospital group is looking for another operator to take it over, instead of having the hospital close down.

Joey le Roux, the private hospital group’s operations executive for the Northern Region, said in a statement that the decision was carefully considered and will be implemented in a way that ensures the community’s continued access to the hospital.

What motivated the decision, among other things, was an assessment of Mediclinic’s current position and challenges in growing the business. “Hospitals based in larger centres such as Mbombela have also restricted our ability to attract specialists to the smaller locality,” added Joey. “We understand the importance of the hospital to the community of Barberton,” she emphasised, and assured the public that Mediclinic’s decision had not been taken lightly. A meeting about the future was recently held between company shareholders and the hospital’s board of directors.

The board committed to identify a suitable operator to take over the facility’s management. It is not clear when the takeover will happen. She stated that it will affect 27 of the hospital’s staff members.

“It is anticipated that they will continue service under the incoming operator.” Should no suitable operator come forth, these employees will be accommodated at Mediclinic Nelspruit or other Mediclinic facilities.

“It is our intention to seek the best possible outcome for both our staff and the community as a whole,” concluded Le Roux.
