Lawyer reappears in court

Local ward councillor and lawyer, Mandla Mamba, briefly appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court last Thursday.

He and five others were charged with malicious damage to property on September 3. The case was postponed for further investigation. National Prosecuting Authority provincial spokesman, Monica Nyuswa, is yet to confirm their next appearance date. The events that led to their arrest were previously relayed by police spokesman, Brig Leonard Hlathi.

He explained that a murder had preceded the purported acts of violence. According to Hlathi, it all started when a man was beaten to death early that morning. Police found the man in a critical condition at 06:00. He was raced to hospital, where he died.

Three men, Benedict Mhlanga, Sipho Mbowane and Boikie Malamba Mokoena, would eventually be arrested in connection with his death. However, this would not happen before community members torched the alleged murderers’ homes.

Firefighters who attempted to extinguish these blazes were attacked by angry community members, who even stole one’s firearm. Mamba, Sihle Nkambule, Sabelo Mlotshwa, Themba Mwali and Gift Mnisi were arrested in connection with these events that night at 20:30.

Mamba and Mnisi were released on bail of R10 000 each on September 9. Nkambule, Mlotshwa and Mwali were granted R500 bail each. The murder case is still continuing.
