Arrested trio granted bail and hearing postponed

HAZYVIEW – Three suspects who were arrested for the possession of unlawful and dangerous weapons appeared in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s Court today. They were granted R1 000 bail each and their case has been postponed to February 6.

The arrests took place on December 27 after SAPS Hazyview had received information from the community regarding a suspicious vehicle. A white Toyota Tazz was located in the Sand River Trust and during the search a .303 rifle, ammunition, hacksaw, axe, two butcher knives and binoculars were found.

When asked if the suspects could be involved in poaching activities, Sgt. Gerald Sedibe MP Corp Comm:Media Liaison, did not want to speculate. “It is better to wait for the outcome of the investigation before we speculate on their involvement in poaching,” said Sedibe. “They, at this stage. have only been charged with the possession of unlawful and dangerous weapons.”

However, when the same question was asked of Maj. Gen. Johan Jooste, commanding officer special projects KNP, he confirmed that the suspects were linked to poaching.

In a press statement the DA didn’t hesitate to communicate their suspicions about the activities the arrested trio were involved in. “The weapons found are typically used in poaching operations, and it is clear that the suspects intended to use it for illicit gains,” said Cllr. Ken Robertson, DA Hazyview.
