Stolen vehicle found abandoned on deputy president’s farm

Umjindi mayor Lazaros Mashaba and Cyril Ramaphosa, whose farm was used as an abandonment site by car thieves.

Two suspects are on the run after they abandoned a Toyota Land Cruiser on deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa’s farm. The vehicle was stolen in Ermelo.

The farm – Thaba Nyoni Feedlot – is situated in the Badplaas area. According to Seg Ockert Ras of the Badplaas Police Station, the car had been stolen in the early morning hours of Saturday. He said the vehicle’s owner who he couldn’t identify, was not at home at the time of the incident.

“He was called by tracker system personnel after the car’s alarm went off. But he told them that he had left his car in Ermelo and that it might have been triggered by dogs. Later farmers of Ermelo spotted the car and when they contacted him, he said he had left the car at home. A chase team, which included local farmers, a private security and police, was dispatched,” said Ras.

He said the two thieves drove pass Lothair and at some point when the car was driving pass the plantations, the tracking signal was lost.

He said a chopper was also deployed to assist in the chase. “When they reached Thaba Nyoni, they entered the farm and started to strip the car. While busy doing so, the chopper spotted them. However, they abandoned the car and fled on foot,” said Ras.

He said its owner collected the car on Monday. According to media reports, chairman of farming security group TAU SA, Henry Geldenhuys, it was confirmed that the farm belonged to Ramaphosa.

“They left the vehicle and fled on foot, it was only a coincidence, there aren’t any links,” Geldenhuys said.
